Grok Build is a coding agent and CLI tool from xAI that brings Grok into the developer's terminal. According to the official website, it works with any codebase and any language. It is available to SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers and is currently an early beta.
Key features
- Plan mode: For complex tasks, you can start in plan mode. All edits are blocked until the plan is approved. You can approve the plan, comment on individual steps, or rewrite it entirely. Once approved, every change is shown as a clear diff.
- Clarifying questions: When a task is unclear, it asks multiple-choice questions, such as about design direction, frameworks, or data structures. Your answers are written directly into the plan.
- Subagents: Larger tasks are handed off to specialized subagents that research, build, and review in parallel. Each subagent has its own context window and can run in its own worktree.
- Skills: You can turn workflows into reusable slash commands. Skills are invoked automatically when a task matches, or you can call them by name. Use
/skillifyto save any session as a new skill. - Plugins and marketplace: A single install bundles skills, agents, hooks, and MCP servers. You can install from a plugin marketplace, or build your own marketplace from any git repository to share capabilities across your team.
- Compatible with the existing ecosystem: AGENTS.md, plugins, hooks, and MCP servers work out of the box, and can connect to Linear, Sentry, Grafana, Postgres, browsers, and more.
- Development workflow tools: These include code search, multi-file editing and refactoring, Git integration, terminal command execution with live output, web search, deep reasoning, code review, background tasks, sandboxed execution, and cross-session memory.
- Headless mode: Can be scripted and run in CI/CD pipelines.
- Theme customization: You can customize colors, fonts, and appearance.
Target users and use cases
Suited to developers and teams who like working in the terminal. Typical scenarios include exploring and refactoring large codebases, building features or running migrations where you want a plan before any changes (for example, migrating session authentication to JWT), tracking down performance regressions, reviewing code before submitting a PR, and running tasks automatically in CI.
Core strengths
- Plan first, then change: every step can be reviewed, so changes stay under your control.
- Parallel subagents make it well suited to large projects.
- Compatible with common conventions such as AGENTS.md and MCP, so switching costs are low.
- Skills and the plugin marketplace make it easy to capture and share team workflows.
Getting started
The official website says you can install it with a single command and then launch it from the terminal in your project directory. Refer to the official website for the exact install command.
Things to note
- It is currently an early beta, so features and behavior may change.
- A SuperGrok or X Premium+ subscription is required.
- It is a commercial xAI product, and the official website does not state an open-source license.
